When we create something, there are underlying motivators that drive us, and certain habits that some of us have come to follow, that we believe bring us to our creative best.
You probably have your own ‘creativity-releasing’ habit, be it a secret recipe or just something you do, for those times you need your faculties to be over a 100%. A lucky t-shirt or shoes work for some, a potent espresso for others. Dark chocolate and green tea (my personal favorite), meditation music, EDM, or yet something else for others.
When it comes to the underlying motivators however, psychologist R. A. Ochse believes there are 8 underlying motivators for creating. Each of us is, perhaps driven by one or more of these. They are:
- The desire for mastery
- The desire to create beauty
- To prove oneself, and
- To discover underlying order
What drives creativity in you?
These 8 motivators were mentioned in Kevin Ashton’s must-read masterpiece, ‘How to Fly a Horse’
